What You May Have Missed From ‘Game of Thrones’ 8×01 “Winterfell”

With a new episode of “Game of Thrones’ on the horizon. There were plenty of callbacks and easter eggs in the premiere that may hint at the tone of the final season. Did you catch them?

Youthful Excitement

Fans were quick to piece the parallel with the unknown northern boy that mirrors both Bran and Arya, as he watches Daenery’s army arriving in Winterfell. The boy was a direct throwback to Bran climbing the Winterfell tower and Arya blending in with the crowd in Wintertown as King Robert Baratheon arrived in the pilot episode.

The arrival of Daenery’s is a callback to Baratheon’s march theme by Ramin Djawadi. Adding subtle changes to add that Mother of Dragon flare, the march has a triumphant undertone to Daenerys’s victory over Robert Baratheon.

Duel Loyalties

Sansa and Daenerys are seen inframe on the shoulders of Tyrion Lannister as he addresses Northern Allies. This is not the first time a scene like this has been used. In the pilot episode Ned Stark as a similar “angel on the shoulders” scene with Catelyn Stark and Maester Lewin. Both scenes allude to a man torn between his affections and his duties.

Kept Promises

Lastly, there is the parallel from the pilot episode where Ned Stark informs Jon Snow that the next time they see another, he will tell him about his mother. Who knew that Ned was a man of his words so to speak as his statue is present when Sam tells Jon his true lineage.
