Tomb Raider Review

Finally a game to movie done well! I had good feelings about this movie even when they first announced the cast. I read the premise and knew they would stick some what close to the 2013 video game Tomb Raider that was by far my favorite Tomb Raider game!

Im going to try not to give too much away! Alicia Vikander was so much fun to watch, and was thrown into some crazy action sequences that were definite nods to the game. Her acting was spot on making me cringe when she was in pain, and sending chills down my spin when she had to save herself.

There were some other little things that I wish were done a little better, like adding more story from the game, but I understand to recreate the game would be an extremely long movie. Also, with the villan, Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins) who works for a company called Trinity(a military order that hunts down all things supernatural in order to rule mankind), I wish he were a little more crazed and terrifying.  Mathias was forced by Trinity to work on the island for 7 years and potentially longer depending on when he finds Himikos tomb. Also, I wish we would have seen some dangers from the wild life. I feel that would have made the island even more treacherous.

I loved that we did get to see Lara’s relationship with her father, and how his disappearance impacted her. I feel like it really plays a part in making Lara Croft the Tomb Raider.

The last thing I wish they would have stuck to more like the game was the ending with Himiko. I preferred the games version of Himiko an actual supernatural being who was preventing people from coming and going by controlling the weather. This is why there are ship wrecked boats all around the island.  Also, in the game Lara makes contact with a helicopter to rescue her and her crew, but as the helicopter arrives it gets struck by lightning and crashes to the ground all because of Himiko. Also, in the game Himiko has an actual army of undead warriors at her disposal that Lara has to face and it’s creepy as hell.

Again I understand that it can’t be exactly like the game and budget wise perhaps they didnt have enough money. All in all I am very please with the outcome. It follows a good portion of the game.  After all, this story is really what makes Lara Croft the Tomb Raider. It shapes her, and teaches her how to become a stronger women, a fighter and a survivor.
