The Crossing Review Episode 1

ABC’s the Crossing recently aired their pilot episode in another science fiction drama, but will this drama take off?  Here are my thoughts on the pilot episode of The Crossing.

ABC’s the Crossing is the story of a small coastal town off of the Pacific Northwest coast who have hundreds of dead and alive people wash up on their shore one day.  With no signs of a wreckage, it becomes clear to Sheriff Jude Ellis (Steve Zahn) that something is not quite right.  And Homeland Security is also right there with him in this idea especially when the survivors start to talk.  According to them, they are refugees that are fleeing a war that will take place 180 years in the future.  Mankind is on the verge of extinction at the hands of the Apex or newer evolution of mankind with superhuman powers.  Safe to say that the Sheriff and the lead investigator for Homeland Security, Emma Peralta ( Sandrine Holt) are in way over their heads especially with the news that there may have been an earlier immigration of refugees from the future with an agenda.

Now I was mildly intrigued with the main idea of the story though it is a plot line we have seen several times (4400, Terminator).  I think I was intrigued to see what this future was like and to see more of these “Apex” people which we see briefly in the character Reece (Natalie Martinez).  Reece’s drive to find her daughter was really the emotional core of the episode, and I liked it.  The plight of the refugees I felt could have been explored more and I’m hoping I will see more of that.

Yet a part of me also feels like I have seen this story told before especially with the introduction of this secondary group of immigrants who came before and have an agenda.  What that agenda is does have me interested?  Are they there to change the future for the humans or those who are considered “Apex” or evolved humans?  I’m glad I wasn’t told anything about their agenda yet which gave me something to look forward to.

The acting was decent in this, but there were times when I wasn’t fully convinced by it.  I just didn’t feel a strong connection with any of the characters except maybe Reece.  I did like the reveal at the end of a certain person being apart of this secondary (or first group) group of immigrants.  Now this is just the pilot.  I’m hoping that more will be dropped in the series as far as character development and plot development to really hook me.  I’m not fully hooked, but I’ll give this one a chance.
