Siren 1×08: “Being Human”


The town of Bristol Cove morn the shocking and mysterious death of Captain Sean McClure. After far too many drinks, Xander McClure (Capitan McClure’s son) nearly spills the truth about what happened that fateful voyage. Ben eventually coaxes Xander out of his speech before the truth comes out. However, the fishermen of Bristol Cover want some form of justice for Captian McClure’s death and quickly turn on Ted Pownall (Ben’s father). Claiming that the fishermen are overworked to fulfill quotas set by Ted’s company and that Captian Sean McClure’s death is a result of overproduction demands.

Meanwhile, Ryn attempts to learn more about humans and grows curious about her the funeral for Capitan Sean McClure. Questioning Maddie’s somber clothes to strolling into the pub funeral for the funeral dress in a simple black dress. While this may have been missed by viewers, Ryn’s appearance shows that she is not an “animal” but somewhat human.

After being discovered by Maddie and Ben, Ryn is escorted out of the funeral. Ryn informs Maddie and Ben that her presence there was to see what a human funeral was like. Concluding there are much like the same funerals held by Sirens. When a Siren dies there are held onto while on a journey to the depth of the ocean and laid to rest in a “Special Place’ where no creature can harm them.

Ryn offers her own condolences to Xander McClure, alerting the Captain’s son that she too is a Siren. After Ryn leaves, Xander follows pursuit only to be stopped by Maddie and Ben. Xander is let in on about Ryn and makes a scene in front of the guest at the wake. Maddie decides to keep an eye on a drunken Xander. While Ben drives his mother home. His mother informs Ben that she was approved for a medical procedure to help with her paralysis thanks to Dr. Decker.

Notable Moments

  • Chris is still shaken after the attack by Donna and decides to leave town in hopes to spare his life. However, being linked to Donna by the Siren song proves to have a lasting effect. So just how far will he get?
  • Ted Pownall and Helen have an interesting conversation about a payment owed to her. Does Ted know about Helen being a Siren? There are so many unanswered questions about the Pownall family and we haven’t even scatched the surface.
  • Sirens are making their way to Bristol Cove causing the wildlife to become uneasy.
  • After taking Xander back to his father’s boat. Xander asks about Ryn and why she is protecting the Siren. To which Maddie simply states that she “sees the good in her.” Leading Xander to remind Maddie that he always admired that side of her and affectionately touches her face. Maddie is quick to reject Xander’s compliment claiming that what they had was in the “past.”
