Shadowhunters leaves everyone wondering what exactly they are fighting for. Alec fights to bring his parabatai home, Clary wants her old life back, Simon tries to find a way to save himself and Jace struggles with his demon side. Here are the highlights from Season 2 Episode 2, “A Door Into the Dark.”

Alec Lightwood

Alec has not aborted his mission to save his parabatai brother, Jace.  He seeks out Valentine when word gets out that mundane fighters have gone missing from local dojos. Aldertree, being reluctant to send the Lightwood siblings on the mission to stop Valentine, gives into Lydia’s suggestion of keeping their toughest Shadowhunters out in the field.

Together, Isabelle and Alec stake out a dojo hoping to catch Valentine. However, the two come up short after one of Valentine’s henchman kills himself before he can be captured. This makes Alec even more desperate to find Jace, and entertains Jocelyn’s idea to use the Adamas stone to find Jace. Jocelyn may have had ulterior motives for Alec to use the Adamas stone in order to find Clary more than to save Jace. However, Alec agrees to do whatever it takes to bring back his parabatai.

This leads to a heartbreaking moment between the Lightwood siblings as Isabelle shows concern for her brother, Alec knowing that using the Adamas could ultimately kill him. Alec disregards Isabelle’s feelings claiming he couldn’t live with out Jace back in his life which may underline the fact that he could live a life without Isabelle his own blood and sister.

Isabelle’s fears came true when Alec is unable to wake up from the spell; blood drips from his nose as Alec goes in too deep beneath the veil and lays unconscious. Can Magnus bring Alec back or is it too late?

Clary Fray

Clary is struggling throughout this episode with her previous life and the life of a Shadowhunter. She feels betrayed by her own mother and, despite knowing now that her brother Jace has demon blood in him, Clary still sees the light and good in Jace that can be saved. She misses her past, and misses the life she once had where there were no Shadowhunters. She clings to her sketchbook and tries to regain who she is.

Clary receives encouraging words from the better half of the Lightwoods, Isabelle. “You have a new life now, you have me and that’s not going to change.” Feeling out of place from being a Shadowhunter and feeling guilty for all the bad she feels was caused by her existence, leads her to flee institute and look for a bit of her past.  She ends up at the art school she was hoping to be accepted in before her life changed forever.

Her mother and Luke attempt to bring her back to institute as being out in the mundane world has become too dangerous. Once again her mother may know best as Clary is taken through a portal by Dot, an old family friend, back to Valentine. Clary finds herself on Valentine’s ship of experiments and later reunited with Jace only to be foiled into a dream vision by Dot and is kept locked away for safe keeping. She talks some sense into Dot who helps her escape with Jace.

Simon Lewis

Simon finds himself a little lost this episode and looking to Magnus to help track down Camille (the vampire ex-lover of Magnus and Simon’s creator). Their interactions were the best part of the episode as the two go on the hunt for Camille. This leads Magnus to take back some old items from his past relationship all the while advising Simon to seek out his true ability as a vampire.   Simon does just that by encanto-ing a fire breathing cobra pet that was a gift from Magnus to Camille.

The ultimate goal of the mission to find Camille was to save Raphael and Simon from having their body parts burned off one by one  by the clave as it was Camille who broke the accords and they are collateral damage so to speak.
