‘Shadowhunters’ Series Finale Review & Thoughts

‘Shadowhunters’ leaves fans with mixed emotions with the conclusion of the Shadow World. Here are my thoughts about the finale, “Alliance; All Good Things.”

Part 1 of “Alliance; All Good Thing” was centric on pairing unlikely allies together to either save or destroy the Shadow World. Fixating on the rescue mission to save Magnus from Edom to the reincarnation of a Demon God (Jonathan) to bring natural order.

Let’s start first with the Magnus’s Rescue Mission! With Heavenly Fire coursing through her veins, Isabelle discovers her new fiery abilities could help save Magnus from Lilith’s attack. Knowing overexposure to demons can cause her to combust. Isabelle willingly goes alone to Edom knowing the cost of her life.

But being family and never leaving one behind Jace, Alec, Simon, Lorenzo Rey, and Meliorn go after Isabelle and Magnus. Sadly for Meliorn, he succumbs to his injuries after his attempt to take on Lilith. But his sacrifice allows the Shadowhunters and Downworlders to band together to take on the flames of Heavenly Fire from Isabelle after defeating the Queen of Hell and destroying Edom in the process.

Leading to Part 2 of “Alliance; All Good Things” the second act revolving around Jonathan. However, not everything is dark in gloomy at first. Sizzy (Isabelle and Simon) take their friendship to the next level, Clace (Clary & Jace) rekindle their relationship and Malec (Magnus & Alec) make wedding plans.

Happiness cannot last forever though as Jocelyn pays Clary a visit to give her one final warning about her ability to create runes. Informing Clary that the Angel Raziel will take action if she uses her abilities again. Sadly Clary has no choice in the matter when it comes to stopping Jonathan. Paying the ultimate sacrifice, Clary is stripped of her runes and her memories.

Clary lives the life she wanted as a mundane being an artist. During an exhibition of her work, she sees Jace in the crowd. They share an exchange similar to the pilot episode where Clary is able to see Jace. Proving that love and fate can never be erased or forgotten.

Overall Thoughts

I am going, to be honest here, the finale felt rushed and sloppy. The battle for humanity and showdown with Jonathan felt underwhelming. I wanted to feel the emotions more from Clary and Jonathan in that final moment. Is it wrong to want the infamous last words from Jonathan in the novel?

Sure the highlight of Part 2 was the Malec wedding that fans have been waiting for. But the vows were brief and the reception felt too quick and overshadowed by Clary’s heartbreaking sacrifice. Everything felt clustered and rushed. Not allowing fans to relish in happier moments.

But in the end Isabelle is Head of the New York Institute, Alec is the new Inquisitor, Jace and Simon become friends, and Maia is happy as Alpha/Jade Wolf restaurant owner. Just curious how the show would have concluded if Freeform did not cancel the beloved series.
