Shadowhunters Mid-Season Finale: “Love you to hell and back”

Shadowhunters have pulled out all the stops for its Season 3 mid-season finale. Taking fans on a wild ride of emotions for fan-favorite characters and teasing at some “Sizzy-ling” developments. Season 3 has had a strong focus on family and what each character would do to protect those they love. From Simon keeping his vampire life a secret from his family. Lucas abandoning his pack to free Clary from imprisonment at the hands of The Clave. Alec and Izzy doing whatever it takes to save their brother Jace from the hands of Lilith. Lilith doing anything and everything to resurrect her son, Jonathan. Magnus paying a visit to his father in Edom to save Jace for his love, Alec. However, their love for family came at a cost and some lost more than others.

Simon was forced by hunger at the hands of the crazed Heidi (Simon’s fledgling) to feed on his sister. His loss of control forces his mother to disown Simon, calling him a “monster” before threatening to kill the vampire. Despite his mother’s brash reaction, his sister forgives Simon and shows empathy about what he went through. Giving Simon hope that one day his mother will accept and forgive him for what he is. But for now, Simon compels his mother to forget what happened and replaces the memory with a story of his death.

Magnus pays his father (Asmodeus) a visit in Edom to ask a favor to help Jace. However, the request comes at a cost, that cost being the loss of The Warlock’s magic. Unable to heal Alec after “The Owl” nearly kills the shadowhunter. Magnus must seek help from unfriendly source to save his love. Fans were quick to piece the loss of Magnus’s power together as the season heavily foreshadowed the Warlock’s lack of magic necessity in his day to day life. So will Magnus be okay without his magic or will life without magic prove to more difficult than he thought?

Lilith has Jace retrieve the rib of Valentine and Clary to resurrect her son, Jonathan. Once brought to Lilith, Clary is dressed for the ritual that will bring Jonathan back and is forced to have a front row seat to Jonathan’s welcoming home party. Lilith gives Clary a parting gift of a rune that will link Jonathan with her life. The Queen of Edom’s insurance rune is to keep her son alive by making Clary collateral damage if anything happens to him. However, Clary uses the rune to her advantage knowing how precious Jonathan is to Lilith. She distracts the Queen of Edom by attempting to sacrifice herself in order for Simon to stop the ritual. Lilith goes to attack Simon and the protective shield blast Lilith back to hell along with Clary and newly resurrected Jonathan.
