‘Shadowhunters’ 3×20 “City of Glass” Review & Thoughts

Amongst the various battles this week in television and film. There is one yet to bring fans to hell…literally! Here are my thoughts about 3×20, “City of Glass”

“City of Class” centralized the theme of love and the bonds we break to keep it. Following the continuation of Magnus and his father Asmodeus trying to reconcile their broken relationship. However, Asmodeus’s increasing presence in Magnus’s life only brings more darkness. Magnus is emotionally vulnerable, allowing his father to easily prey on his weakened state. Persuading Magnus to take back his apartment from Lorenzo Rey with his father’s assistance.

Just as Magnus begins to feel the darkness of his father’s persuasion. Maryse pays Lorenzo’s former residence a visit after Alec returned the family ring to her. Knowing her son’s past interactions with Lorenzo Rey and his desire to make Magnus whole again. Maryse believed that Lorenzo Rey had something to do with son’s broken engagement plan and pain.

Surprised to see Magnus present and taking up his old roots. Maryse reveals to the warlock of Alec’s intent to propose to him and that there had to of been a reason for their breakup. Quick to piece things together, Magnus confronts his father and sends him to limbo. Solidifying that some bonds can never be fixed.

Which also rings true for Clary and Jonathan, despite Clary’s turn to the dark side and their sibling bond becoming stronger. There would always be light in Clary, a light that brings her back from her darkest hours. Izzy and Simon, two of her closest friends are willing to risk their lives to bring Clary back in one last attempt. Luckily, no lives were needed to be spared after Jace stabs Clary with Izzy’s remanufactured version of Glorious.

Now that Jonathan has brought hell to earth and has destroyed the Morningstar sword. The only person that will be able to stop Jonathan is Clary. Unfortunately, Clary was the tether that kept Jonathan grounded and with their bond now broken. Jonathan returns to his volatile, rash, and overly aggressive self. Clary, in the end, must choose to fight for family or to fight for the family that demands you to based on namesake.

Overall Thoughts

The episode paced nicely with storyline and action that was mildly entertaining. Hopefully, we will get that Malec wedding that the fans have been promised after Magnus returns from Edom.

Lastly, Maia and Jordan’s story felt bittersweet and I have some reservations about how the show will wrap up Luke’s story that has now been intermixed with the Praetor. Mind you the Praetor is responsible for allowing Jordan to die from silver poisoning. I am holding out hope for Alpha Maia to avenge Jordan’s death and seeking truth from the Praetor. I like to believe that Maia caught onto Luke’s change of behavior and will intervene with the destruction of the Heavenly Fire serum.
