Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

I am a huge fan of Jane Austins “Pride and Prejudice”, and I am also a huge fan of zombie movies and shows such as Resident Evil and The Walking Dead. For some reason or another I haven’t gotten around to reading “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” written by Seth Grahame-Smith even though I own it.  Now, you better believe that, after seeing this movie, I am going to be picking it up and dedicating time to read it. I like to keep my mind open when writers  recreate classic novels or simply write something out of the ordinary. However, I don’t like when a writer takes a classic character and changes them completely. That I have to say is what made PPZ so great to me! They really stayed true to those classic characters that I love. It blended the classic Pride and Prejudice so wonderfully with the zombie apocalypse creating a very entertaining movie.

It’s quite comical to see characters you love being bad ass zombie killers; but still having many great moments that happen in the original Pride and Prejudice. The love story behind it was strongly burning through. I have to say in the whole movie my favorite scene has to be when Mr. Darcy proposes for the first time to Elizabeth. She asks if it was he who separated Mr. Bingly from her sister Jane, and when he admits it was him it turns into a fight between the two, and not a verbal one at that. It was awesome and hilarious; the whole theater was laughing.

I also thought the cast they picked is perfect with Lily James as Elizabeth Bennet and Sam Riley as Mr. Darcy. I loved the chemistry between these characters and they held composure even in the silliest of scenes which made it that much better. I also really liked how they weren’t exactly like other Darcy’s and Bennet’s that we have seen before. They mark these characters with their own flair.

I also loved Lena Heady as Lady Catherine De Bourgh with the twist of making her one of the most bad ass women in this zombie apocalypse.

Then there is Matt Smith who was probably my favorite Parson Collins of all time.  He was absolutely hilarious!

I have always loved the elegance in the clothing of this era as well, and the movie definitely created some amazing wardrobe pieces. With the additional knife harnesses and gun holsters, it was really fun to see the gorgeous dresses the ladies got to wear, and the concealing weapons underneath. This will, no doubt, give movie goers ideas for Halloween.

You obviously don’t go to a movie like this thinking its going to be Oscar worthy.  You go because you want to be entertained and for me it did just that. I feel that movie goers are becoming a little snooty in their ideas that every movie should be Oscar worthy and/or will only go see a movie with high ratings. I have seen a great number of movies that weren’t rated well, but that I absolutely loved.  When I raved about it to my friends (or make them watch it), they think the movies are great too. I want people to start going to movies and judging them on their own again rather than just reading what a handful of critics think and judging it based off of that.

If you’re like me and enjoy being entertained I recommend you see this clever movie that blends the world of Jane Austin’s  “Pride and Prejudice”,and the horrors of a zombie apocalypse.
