Hidden Gem: Plebs

Hidden Gem: Plebs

We live in the Golden Age of Television. The streaming movement has changed the way we look at TV due to the accessibility we possess by opening apps such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, and many more. When you stop to think about the implications of the day and age we live in you might realize that you will never be bored again unless you want to. Services such as Netflix and Hulu have provided an affordable way for us to watch TV shows until our eyes wither away. Never has there been such quality and quantity in television. Shows such as Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Mad Men will always be remembered as great shows.  The importance of those shows is that they all began around the same time, from the point in which those shows began we never looked back. From standard channels like CBS,FOX, AND NBC, to cable channels like AMC,FX,HBO etc, great television shows continued to be produced year in and year out.

The great news about this wave of quality television is that we can pick and choose and always find something for us, the bad thing is that we cannot possibly watch every good show out there and many shows get lost in the shuffle. Marketing plays a huge role in viewership as well as brand recognition. Netflix has done an incredible job producing hit after hit with their Netflix Series that I feel compelled to watch every show that is tabbed as a Netflix Original. The thing about living in the Golden Age of Television is that there is so much out there that deserves to be watched, but might not get the attention as some of the bigger networks. Mainstream shows will continue to be great and they will continue to be the most talked about shows around the watercooler at work, but there are many hidden gems out there that deserved to be talked about!

With every TV show that survives to a second season there must be a good size viewership or following. Therefore no show can ever be truly a “hidden gem”, but there are shows that garner much less attention than others. The show “Plebs” ,which can be found on HULU, is truly a gem of a show that is worth watching. The show is a 20 minute comedy sitcom style of a show. The premise of the show is the usual of three best friends, hanging out living together, trying to get laid, and trying to elevate their financial status. The show has a very common and widely used theme that can be found across shows like Workaholics, Sirens, Its always sunny in Philadelphia, and many other shows that feature a group of friends getting into shenanigans. The thing that sets Plebs apart from the rest of these shows is the fact that it takes place in ancient Rome. The witty banter and hilarious situations that the guys find themselves in are formatted to fit in with the lifestyle of those who lived in ancient Rome. An example of the hilarity that ensues is the fact that two of the main characters work in an office, only this office is in Rome, and without any technological advancements, the duties of the two characters are copier and shredder. Yes one man copies documents by hand while the other shreds documents by hand. Without spoiling any more of the show the only thing left to be said is that the show is just straight up funny and deserves to be viewed.Everyone needs a break from watching thriller after thriller of a show, and sitcoms make the perfect in between show when you just want to laugh a while before you drag yourself into another emotional investment that is sure to leave you wrecked after you find out that your favorite character dies. Plebs is just one of those Hidden Gems that you will be glad you watched.
