Handmaid’s Tale: Eden’s Tragic Story

The introduction of Eden Spencer to the world of Gilead was shocking and heartbreaking to viewers. However, Eden was introduced in the first episode of the hit series. Making Eden possibly one of the most tragic characters of Handmaid’s Tale.

Viewers were first introduced to Eden Spencer when she was married off as a young bride to Nick Blaine in a Prayvaganza mass-marriage ceremony. However, her introduction could have taken place in the pilot episode. After rewatching episode 1 titled, “Offred” it is hard not to notice the uncanny resemblance of the young girl in pink being escorted by guards and Wives of Gilead.

Divulging more into Offred’s timeline and years spent in Gilead. Following the pregnancies of both Ofwarren and Offred. Along with the age in with Offred was captured at twenty-five years old and her current age to be in her thirties. One can assume that the girl in pink is to be ten years old at most in the pilot episode. With the five-year timeline gap from Offred’s capture to the present storyline. Eden’s age fits perfectly into the Gilead timeline.

Eden was a naive fifth-teen-year-old, that was groomed by her mother to become an Econowife. However, she finds her marriage to Nick to be anything but bliss. After Nick confirms that he does not love her, Eden seeks the affections of another. Eden finds herself falling for a more age-appropriate guard, Isaac. The two of them run off to the Canadian Border but are caught and taken back to Gilead for sentencing.

The two love-struck teenagers decline the opportunity to renounce their sins and pleads for mercy. Leading to the heartbreaking recite of 1 Corinthians 12:4-5  by Eden just before she is pushed off the diving board with Isacc beside her. Both are weighed down by a weight and chains forcing them to drown to death.

Recalling back to Offred’s initial interaction with a young Eden while on a walk. Offred makes eye contact with the young girl (Eden) and offers a smile in the scene from the pilot. Chilling to know that Offred had met Eden as a young innocent girl in pink. To later witness her death for choosing love in a Gilead world.
