‘Game of Thrones’: The Crypts of Winterfell’s Huge Role In Season 8

Jon Snow has many dreams of the Crypts of Winterfell throughout the novel series. These dreams can be clues of what fans can expect in Season 8 based on the recent teaser trailer. “He was wandering the empty castle, searching for his father, descending into the crypts. Only this time the dream had gone further than before. When he turned he saw that the vaults were opening, one after the other. As the dead kings came stumbling from their cold graves.” – ‘Game of Thrones’ , Jon VII

HBO possibly teased this dream sequence in the recent teaser trailer. While as first we may think the icy chill rolling through the crypts is the Night King. But perhaps the cold chill approaching Jon, Sansa and Arya is the cold awaking of The Kings of Winter!

There is the idea that something or someone could be kept deep inside The Crypts of Winterfell. In ‘The World of Ice & Fire’ Winterfell is described as a stronghold. Something that can help the people of Winterfell to protect themselves if The Wall is breached.

The Crypts of Winterfell was built by Brandon the Builder after The Long Night.  The crypts were originally built to be a prison for the dead. Based on superstition iron swords are placed across the laps of The Kings of Winter. It is believed that iron is used to keep vengeful spirits within the crypts according to Old Nan fables. If you look closely at the teaser trailer you can see the statues of The Kings of Winter in the background as an icy chill rolls through the crypts. ‘Game of Thrones’ has been know to plant easter eggs in plan sight to tease of themes to come. So expect these Old Nan fables to play out in some capacity.

What could the Crypts of Winterfell be hiding? Fans believe that someone/something connected to the Night King is kept there. Based on bedtime stories by Old Nan, the allure of a Night Queen being kept in Winterfell is a popular theory.
