When We First Met: A Delightful Travel Through Time

I had the pleasure of attending the Netflix screening of When We First Met with cast members Alexandra Daddario (Avery Martin), Adam Devine (Noah Ashby), Shelley Hennig (Carrie Grey), Robbie Amell (Ethan) and King Bach (Max). When We First Met revolves around the character of Noah Ashby and his attempts to change the course of events the night of Halloween 2014 where he falls in love with Avery Martin by a time travel photobooth. Sure the premise sounds a little silly, but don’t most romantic comedies have a cheesy premise?

However, the most problematic piece about the film that I found was that the secondary cast members outshined the main characters. Carrie Grey (Shelley Hennig) stole screens that involved her best friend counterpart Avery Martin (Alexandra Daddario). The sarcastic and blunt nature of Carrie packed in laughs that “Carrie-d” the film. Not only was Carrie funny, she was a likable character. Viewers ultimately discovered that everything Noah loved about Avery was derived from Carrie.

Another scene stealer was the overconfident best friend, Max (King Bach). My favorite scene by far was the allocation between Noah and Max which resulted in the casualty of innocent balloons. Along with the man-to-man flirt game instruction between the two best friends that you will just have to watch for yourself!

My only complaint about the film was the lack of Max and Carrie throughout the film. Perhaps even a little less time hopping as some of the time jumps lead to some sloppy plot holes and viewer interpretation. Overall When We First Met is a fluffy film that appeases to the romantics and will become a Valentine’s Day classic.
