Final Fantasy VII Remake Story Trailer Review

The Final Fantasy VII Remake is just on the horizon, and fans are counting the days. Recently, Square Enix released the first story trailer for the game. Here are my thoughts on the newest trailer released for the much anticipated game.

The Final Fantasy VII remake has many a Final Fantasy fan salivating for this new edition to the franchise. I am no different. Now, before I get into my review, I want to give you a little background on my connection to the iconic game. I personally have never played the original game nor fully watched all of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. In fact, one could call me a fringe fan who has picked up bits and pieces of the story over the years. I know some of the major spoilers to the game which I will not reveal here.

One may ask, why is this important to know? While I will have a relatively fresh pair of eyes to see this trailer, I can still catch some of the references I have learned of over the years. My review will be based off of how excited it got a more casual fan to whether I think it a good trailer for all fans including those who know way less than I do of the iconic game.

Here is the latest trailer:

What is my rating of this trailer? I give this a solid A. I am very excited to see more of this very vibrant and unique story. I also love how good the game looks. Though I don’t know all the nods the trailer gives to the original, I know of quite a few.

I liked the balance it showed of story and combat in the trailer, but I also really liked how it is not afraid to take risks. And yes I am talking about the cross dressing scene. Many fans of the original were afraid that, due to our more sensitive culture that we live in, that this scene may not make it into the remake. I am really glad that it did. I am always a fan of games showing tolerance and acceptance.

I also love how the characters really seem to shine in this trailer. I like the range of emotions we see in this trailer as well as so many of the characters. Sephiroth is always a delight to see in full HD. And there were a few things that were new even for long term fans. I like the fresh takes in the trailer as well as nods to the old game (chocobo summons), and I always love a little back story added in as we see with Cloud and Tifa as kids.

The only real critique I will give is that this trailer seemed geared towards those who have played the game before. While there is nothing really wrong with that, if the game developer’s intention is to pull in new people as well, this trailer may be a little confusing and overwhelming. Final Fantasy VII Remake has to do extremely well due to the high budget it has. This game has a very loyal and excited fan base, but it wouldn’t hurt to bring in new people to that fan base. I was able to follow along with the trailer only because I knew a thing or two about the plot. But someone, who knows nothing about FFVII, may have a tougher time of it.

But this is such a minor critique. I really did love this trailer. This trailer really got me excited to dive into this gritty and action packed world. I can’t wait until April 10th!
