Batman Trailer Breakdown

Batman Trailer Breakdown

The newest reboot of the Batman franchise as a new tone. One that has fans excited for the dark side of Gotham. Here are some riddles we may have solved.

The Main Villains

In the opening scene, we hear the chilling rips of duck tape offscreen. Where we later discover the first victim of The Riddler. The victim’s face completely duct-taped with the phrase “No More Lies.” This leads to the key plot hinted by the Director, Matt Reeves about the corruption of Gotham City. Echoed in the words of The Riddler encouraging Batman to open his eyes to the corruption around him.

Leaving a case that The Riddler may not be the only villain Batman should be concerned about, perhaps the true villain of Gotham is, Commissioner, Pete Savage, and the Gotham Police. Which is alluded to by the scene in the trailer where Batman is fighting the Police in the precinct and the heavy close up shot of Commissioner, Pete Savage’s face.

There is also the newspaper clipping that headlines: Maroni Drug Bust. Whom is he infamous comic-book Mobster that threw acid on Harvey Dent’s face, turning Harvey into his alter ego, Two-Face (who may be also apart of this new Batman universe).

We also get our first look at Collin Firth as Oswald Cobblepot “The Penguin.” Who is rising into villainous ranks as is seen in the trailer trying to flee from Batman after some sort of deal or heist.

The Timeline

The trailer shows a young James Gordon, who has not risen to Commissioner ranks. However, he is clearly praised and respected by his colleagues as he walks down a hallway during a crime scene. Director, Matt Reeves also established that the timeline is two years into Bruce Wayne taking on the Batman role. Skipping ahead from the origin story (that everyone should know by now) but never losing the origin of Batman as there will be conflicts that cause Bruce Wayne to reflect back on his origin.

We also know that the timeline takes place in the 21st century. As we see various extras and minor characters holding up smartphones to video or use as devices against Batman.

Batman and his Lair

This Batman universe tosses out old ideas from previous reboots. Adding elements to make Rob Pattinson’s version completely his own. Starting with the suit where the Batman emblem is made from the barrials of two guns. Possible the same gun that famously killed his parents. His suit looks more like riot gear that has battle markings from previous fights.

His lair is not your typical layer, no fancy gadgets, pristine displays or Alfred waiting just outside the door. Batman’s lair looks to be under an abandoned train station or possibly underground in a cemetery. Seen by the support beams and lack of decor, it is safe to assume that the lair is underground in a manmade space.

We also get a glimpse of the Batmobile in the last few shots of the trailer. With a closer look, you can notice the welding on the panels, leading fans to believe that Bruce Wayne himself constructed his gadgets along with his Batmobile. Definitely unique from the previous interpretations of the caped crusader.
