Attack on Titan Season 4 trailer review

The hit anime Attack on Titan is coming back with its fourth and final season and has recently released a new trailer. Here is one fan’s review of the new trailer.

Attack on Titan has quickly become one of my favorite television shows of all time second only to Battlestar Galactica. It is dark, gritty, intense and so well written. It has so many twists and turns in not only plot, but in character development as well.

For fans, season 4 is highly anticipated. Manga readers know what roller coaster is coming. Check out the season 4 trailer that just recently dropped:

Before I get into my review, I want to make a quick note that I have read a bit of the manga and know events in the story that goes beyond what has been shown in the anime. For this review, I will try my best not to bring up any spoilers from the manga.

Now on to the review. The first thing I want to get into is the art style. Season 4 has a different production company, Mappa studios, creating this final season. For some fans, this may be concerning especially those who are having flashbacks to Game of Thrones Season 8. Well let me put your mind at ease a bit. Mappa is quite a good studio creating such animes like Yuri on Ice, Dororo, Kids on the Slope, Terror in Resonance, Banana Fish and more. It has a good reputation when it comes to creating good anime.

As for my opinion of the art in the trailer, I think it stays truer to the manga art style and is still very good. Now some people who have not read the manga may say that they completely changed how some of the main characters like Mikasa looks like, but that is the change that happens in the manga. I think the art style seems a little more grittier and darker in tones which fits this season if they stay true to what is coming in the manga.

What I saw the most in the trailer is that this is going to be a very human story mixed with intense action. New characters will be introduced and old characters will be going through the ringer. But that is to be expected. This is Attack on Titan. This show has never been one to pull their punches. And I see that in this trailer. There looks like there is going to be a lot of intense and exciting action coming our way.

Now one thing I do want to mention is the topic of the musical score for the final season. Not to worry Attack on Titan fans. Our favorite and epic music composer Hiroyuki Sawano is going to be creating the music for season 4 for which I am super excited about. Hiroyuki Sawano has really elevated this anime with his insanely fantastic and powerful tracks. His work for this show has become one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. So I can not wait to see what music he comes up with for this season.

As for how the trailer is put together, I liked the flow and how it is edited. I think it did a really good job in showing exciting action sequences as well as give us snippets of the more human drama. To some manga reading fans they may say it shows too much, but I don’t think it does. I think that non-manga readers won’t know what it is they are seeing or understand it and the parts that could potentially be spoilers flash by so quickly. That is just my opinion though.

Now I can’t say too much more on the trailer without going into in-depth coverage of the characters and events that I saw that pertain to parts of the manga not seen by anime only fans. I do want to make a quick side note. Some people are a little nervous about this final season because it is the final season and many people are still feeling the disappointment left behind by Game of Thrones season 8. I want to assuage some of this. Attack on Titan has always been pretty faithful to the manga and the manga is a phenomenal source material. On top of that the story in the manga is nearly completed so the anime will not have to make up their own ending and plot points. Game of Thrones did not have this.

With this being said, if the new studio follows what is already in the manga then we could be looking at one of the best anime endings this year. So I am super excited to see what is in store.
