AHS Breakdown and Thoughts: 8×09 “Fire and Reign”

American Horror Story continues to drag out the long-awaited battle of good vs. evil in the apocalypse. Leaving fans to question how the season will wrap up in next week’s season finale. Here is my breakdown and thoughts about episode 9, “Fire and Reign.”

This season of American Horror Story continues to struggle with proper pacing and prolonged timelines set in the past. The series has yet to catch up with the present timeline since episode 3 of this season. Michael Langdon is on a witch hunt and Cordelia does her best to prep her girls for an all-out war against the Antichrist. However, Cordelia is caught off guard as her protection spell over Miss Robichaux’s Academy is broken by Dinah Stevens so she can become a famous television personality. Allowing Michael and newly acquired Ms. Meade 2.0 to reign terror over the Academy. Killing Queenie, Zoe, Bubbles McGee, and various sisters of the Coven.

Luckily Mrytle, Cordelia, Madison, and Mallory are able to escape. However, despite Cordelia’s attempts to bring her girls back, she discovers that the souls of her girls are erased. Something that Cordelia herself did to Ms. Meade’s soul and I have a feeling in the end souls will be on the table for bargaining between Micahel and Cordelia. So I guess we will see if Quennie and Zoe’s souls will be saved or lost forever.

Knowing that time is of the essence, Mrytle believes that Mallory posses abilities to time travel and reverse past events (over the whole AHS universe). Possibly bringing back her fallen sisters and defeating Michael. However, testing this ability comes at a cost if the spell does not work, death.

Mallory bravely performs the spell and travels back in time to 1918 Siberia, to help save the life of Anatasia and her family. Unable to save her witch sister, Anatasia, Mallory returns back to reality after nearly dying from the spell. Mrytle believes that Mallory is capable of bringing The Coven back to life despite failing to complete the spell. Cordelia knows the spell is a risk and ultimately must come to terms with fate saying, “I die so she can be born.” Despite her desire to live, Cordelia has always been one to put her life on the line for The Coven and I get the feeling this will be the same in the battle against Michael.

Lastly, there is the infancy of The Cooperative (a.k.a The Illuminati). Viewers get to see the true villains in this season in the form of satanist engineers Mutt and Jeff. They are able to enact their plan to destroy the earth, acting as puppeteers so to speak as they lay down the foundation through Ms. Meade’s influence and ushering in leaders of their own (Ms. Veneable).

Questions I Hope To Be Answered

  • Where is Misty Day? As the storyline continues I can’t help notice the vacancy of Misty Day though-out the episode after her resurrection. Will she be apart of the final battle? I need to see more of my favorite Swamp Witch!
  • Will we ever learn about Timothy and Emily? The star-crossed lovers of Outpost 3 seemed like precious cargo. Their deaths and introductions could not have been just story-filler. There has to be meaning about their rare blood type and what they have to bring to The Cooperative agenda.
