AHS 8×04 Review: ‘The War of Warlocks and Witches’

Who needs the end of the world to be a battle between ice and fire. When we have witches and warlocks?  This episode we explore past seasons and characters in what could be one of the best episodes of the series. Here is my review of episode four, “Could It Be…Satan.”

The Cooperative and Warlocks

We learn a lot this episode and one major plot reveal that will shape the season is the link between The Cooperative and Warlocks. During this flashback episode, we learn about the previous tenants of Outpost 3 a Warlock Academy ran by Grand Chancellor Ariel. This school of Warlocks was driven underground after their academy was burnt down. Due to Supreme Cordelia Foxx outing magic to the world and causing fear within their neighbors.

Grand Chancellor Ariel seeks revenge on Supreme Cordelia by searching out what he believes is the Alpha Warlock. The only Warlock powerful enough to dethrone the Supreme Witch and shift power to the Warlocks. Grand Chancellor Ariel pays Michael Langdon a visit in jail after reviewing his abilities in a police interrogation tape. After breaking Michael Langdon out of jail he recruits Michael into his fold and conducts a test to ensure they found their Alpha Warlock. Grand Chancellor Ariel chooses to forget that Michael Langdon nearly killed them all by freezing them to death during his test trails, along with the brutal deaths of the detective the butcher. My guess is that the Warlocks will learn that their selfish desire for power will get the best of them. As the Warlocks literally just made a deal with the devil.

Witches v. Warlocks

After Grand Chancellor Ariel claims Michael Langdon to be the Alpha Warlock, he sends out an invitation to Supreme Cordelia Foxx for a visit. The Supreme quickly realizes that her power and title of Supreme is in question. As Grand Chancellor Ariel request that she and Michael Langdon partake in the ‘Seven Wonders’ test. Of course, Supreme Cordelia objects recalling the loss of Misty Day and is questioned about the loss of another sister, Queenie.

The loss of Queenie weighs heavy on Supreme Cordelia as she attempted to resurrect and save Queenie from the Hotel Cortez. However, due to the hellish nature of the hotel and the darkness that dwells within, her abilities do not allow her to bring back Queenie. The Warlocks understand her declination and dismiss her from their academy. However, Michael Langdon has other plans after overhearing Cordelia’s story he makes his own visit to the Hotel Cortez. Where he is able to successfully escort Queenie out of hell along with Madison Montgomery from her own personal hell.

But what sort of plan does Michael Langdon have in store for Madison by bringing her back? My theory is that she will play a vital role as either the mole or the traitor to either party. Will, she be loyal to her sisters are will she cross them to keep out of retail hell? Either way, Michael Langdon bringing back Queenie and Madison from hell is detrimental for Supreme Cordelia as she will be dethroned. Leaving the witches vulnerable at the hands of Warlocks and Michael Langdon.

Notable Thoughts

  • The biggest question this episode was that of Mallory. Is she a new witch or an old witch? We still don’t know who the resurrected witches are in forms of Mallory, Coco, and Dinah. But seeing Mallory in a flashback with Violet and Cordelia in Miss Robichaux’s Academy leaves fans wondering just who Mallory is.
  • Keep an eye on the character reference and introduction the young warlock, Mr. Banks. I get the feeling his last name alone is also a connection to Roanoke. Even the location of the Warlock Academy itself could be the former home of Roanoke that is now underground.
