AHS 8×03: “Forbidden Fruit” Review and Thoughts

There is nothing ‘forbidden’ for the rest of the season as American Horror Story has poisoned us with revelations, death, and resurrection. Here are my thoughts on episode three, “Forbidden Fruit.”

Revelations

The episode picks up with Michael Langdon’s interrogation of those in Outpost 3. We learn just exactly what he is looking for, witches and pure evil. The most interesting parts of the interrogation were of Mallory (Billie Lourd) and Dinah Stevens (Adina Porter). Where Michael Langdon states that he is excited to see Dinah Stevens again. This small revelation has us wondering just what he meant and what their first encounter was like previously.

Then later he claims that Mallory has a darker side to her. When Mallory is pushed by Michael to tap into the darkness she erupts in a scream and manipulates fire. Scaring Michael Langdon into revealing his true form to Mallory. Later Michael while in a ritual claims he thought he killed them all (witches) but there is one left in Outpost 3. We presume this remaining witch is Mallory due to their previous encounter.

Another revelation we have in this episode is Ms. Meade. We learn that Ms. Meade is a prototype created by The Cooperative to protect Outpost 3. However, there is some slight confusion about her existence prior to becoming artificial. A Ms. Meade recalls memories of her youth and time as a secret agent. Then there is a vague memory of taking care of a blonde, blue-eyed child before becoming a robotic piece for The Cooperative.

Death

We finally learn the fate of Brock (Bill Eichner), Coco’s boyfriend that was abandoned in the pilot episode. Brock has seen better days as he wears the radiated scares of the nuclear bomb. His anger drives him to hunt down Coco and Outpost 3. Hitching a ride in the undercarriage of the mysterious buggy to Outpost 3. He seeks out Coco during the Masquerade Ball in disguise and lures her back to her chambers. Where he reveals to Coco that he is alive and ultimately kills her for abandoning him.

Then we have the mass killing of the entire Outpost by poisoned apples. Ms. Meade pledges her loyalty to Ms. Venable and her goal to secure a place in Sanctuary. The two devise a plan to ride the competition by playing evils queens and poisoning the newly gifted apples from The Cooperative to feed to Outpost 3. A plan that was thought to be conjured up by Ms. Venable and Ms. Meade. However, when Ms. Venable proudly pays Michael Langdon a visit to share her crafty disposal of the competition. He is less than amused about Ms. Venable’s intrusion. Ms. Meade points a gun at Michael Langdon to finish the plan to rid him. But turns the gun on Ms.Venable and kills her. Ms. Meade is confused as to why she malfunctioned. In which Micahel Langdon explains that she was created by him and that he was the little boy she raised from her memories.

Resurrection

The witches have ascended on the ill-fated Outpost. Cordelia Foxx (Sarah Paulson), Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts), and Myrtle Snow (Frances Conroy) are back! However, their presence at Outpost 3 is strictly business as Cordella instructs Madison and Myrtle to gather their sisters. The two collect the bodies of Coco, Mallory, and Dinah. Once they are resurrected Madison delivers her signature line, “Surprise bitch, I bet you thought you’ve seen the last of me.” Hinting that the newly resurrected Coco, Mallory, and Dinah are not their old vessels. But in fact Violet Harmon (Taissa Farmiga), Misty Day (Lily Rabe), and Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe). My theory is that when Michael Langdon attacked the Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Cordelia divides the souls of her sisters into vessels to safeguard them from the antichrist until she can resurrect them one by one. Guess we will see in the upcoming episodes how this war between witches and the antichrist will play out.
