thewalkingdead5d

While fans are still trying to calculate just who died on the Season 6 finale of the hit series of The Walking Dead, we find ourselves wondering if the television adaptation will follow the widely popular comic? This lead us to the differences in the comic books on characters that met their fate in relation to the television adaptation. So with a spoiler warning, here are 5  character deaths from the comic book series that have been altered in the television show.

***MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT CAUGHT UP WITH THE COMIC BOOK SERIES OR RECENT SEASON OF THE WALKING DEAD. ARTICLE CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN***

#1 and #2 : Lori Grimes and Judith Grimes

In The Walking Dead comics, Lori Grimes suffers a death seen to be one of the most controversial deaths in the comic book series. In issue #48, Lori is trying to flee the prison with her family, and Carl takes off from Rick, causing Lori to be singled out by The Governor, who has overtaken the prison by force. The Governor orders Lilly to “Finish them off,” in which she shot Lori from behind while holding newly born Judith in her arms. Lori’s body collapses onto the ground crushing Judith beneath her.

LORI

Lori Grimes’s death is completely different on the television adaptation. Lori dies giving birth to Judith and is later put down by her own son, Carl before she can become a walker. Her body is later eaten by a walker that was left roaming the halls of the prison. Rick Grimes discovers the engorged walker and kills the walker in a rage over the loss of Lori. There is a more happy ending however for Judith as she is currently still alive in the series and for now she is safely tucked away in Alexandria, under the protection of Father Gabriel Stokes (although this does not appease worries for Judith).

#3 and #4:  Tyreese and Hershel

There was huge change made into the death of Tyreese from the comic to the television series. The death may be similar to the television death of a beloved character. In issue #46 Tyreese is taken captive by Gabriel and the soldiers who take him to The Governor. He is taken back to the prison to be used as a bargaining chip in order for Rick and his group to give up the prison. Tyreese pleads for Rick not to, in which he does, and an angry Governor proceeds to use Michonne’s katana to cut off Tyreese’s head in front of the group. He later kicks his head over the prison fence for all them to see. Michonne, after the attack on the prison, goes to find the reanimated head of Tyreese’s as walker and stabs her blade through. Sound at all familiar to another death seen on the series? This death was in fact recreated and used for Hershel Greene in Season 4.

Hershel Greene in the comics dies by The Governor, however his death plays out differently than what fans of the television series saw in Season 4. Hershel’s death was seen in issue #48, after his last son Billy was killed fleeing the prison during the massive gunfire. He cradles his son’s lifeless body in his arms and ignores Rick’s pleads to have him join them in the truck to flee in safety. Hershel lost majority of his children and family with Maggie being the only remaining survivor of his family. He realizes she will be safe with Glenn and the group, and decides to give up the fight. His last words are, “Dear God, just kill me,” in which The Governor shoots Hershel in the head.

Fans of the comic book found Tyreese’s death in the television adaptation to be underwhelming. Tyreese, if you remember, was caught off guard while looking through photos in Noah’s home, and is bitten by his brother. Michonne, in hopes to save Tyreese, chops off his arm, and he dies from the blood loss. For a character that was so powerful and influential to the group, his death was not satisfying to fans of the television series as well. I too found his departure from the show to be unnecessary for the storyline at that time.

#5 Dale Horvath

In issue #66, Dale is bitten on the shoulder by a walker after a scuffle, and decides to conceal his bite in order to leave undetected. His hope is to spare Andrea the pain of his loss, as most know the two of them dated in the comic book series and hooked up on varies occasions. While leaving the group, he is captured by  The Hunters and wakes up to see half his leg is eaten. Rick, Michonne, Abraham and Andrea rescue him and kill the group of Hunters. Once back safely with the group, Andrea discovers he was bitten and will die. Andrea stays with Dale until he passes and than shoots him in the head before he can reanimate.  This death was given to the television character Bob in the series. The storyline almost playing out page by page with Bob and Sasha’s storyline.

On the television series, Dale dies while patrolling the farm, and finds a dead cow in the field. He goes over to examine the remains of the cow and is caught off guard by a walker that had snuck up behind him. The walker, as most know, is the same walker that Carl Grime’s was provoking in the swamplands around the farm. Dale has his stomach ripped open by the walker, and is later put down by Daryl Dixon out of mercy.
