July “Must See” Movies Guide

JULY

The Legend of Tarzan

One can admit that when the trailer for The Legend of Tarzan was released, there was a hesitation and maybe some cringing. There have been countless movie adaptations of the familiar story, did Hollywood need to add another? In The Legend of Tarzan, Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) leaves the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Margot Robbie). Tarzan is invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). The Legend of Tarzan hit theaters over the 4th of July weekend, in hopes to gain more numbers. So far the reviews of the film are mixed, with audience members entertained while critics have given the film horrible reviews.

The Secret Life of Pets

The most animated feature film since the release of Finding Dory, will be dropping in theater July 8th. The head dog of the Manhattan complex is a quick-witted terrier rescue (voiced by Louis C.K.), whose position at the epicenter of his master’s universe is suddenly threatened when she comes home with Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet), a sloppy mutt with no manners. The two share their indifferences, which lands them in abut of trouble soon when they meet an adorable white bunny Snowball (voiced by Kevin Hart). It turns out that Snowball is the leader of an army of pets that were abandoned and are determined to get back at humanity and every owner-loving pet.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

Let’s be real here, movies that star Zac Efron and Adam Devine tend to pack the laughs. Not to mention they are both great film candy for the ladies. So when the trailer was released for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, I am sure mentally a bunch of hands were at ready to volunteer as tribute. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is about party-brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) placing an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding. The boys find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the uncontrollable duo, that may ruin their sister’s wedding. Join Mike and Dave’s party on July 8th.

Ghostbusters

Being fans of the cult classic and original Ghostbusters franchise, there was this shock that Hollywood planned a reboot. More shocking to some was that the Ghostbuster themselves would be played by an all female cast. Thankful most fans reservations and comments about the female assemble were shut down when the first trailer for the film released. Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Bergman (Melissa McCarthy) are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. A few years later, Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University, but her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Gilbert reunites with Bergman and others when ghosts invade Manhattan and try to save the world. Ghostbusters drops July 15th, “We’re afraid of no ghost!”

Star Trek Beyond

Trekkies have been eagerly awaiting the release of the J.J Abram’s install of the Star Trek franchise, hoping third times a charm. The U.S.S. Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test. Star Trek Beyond will hit theaters on July 22nd.

Lights Out

Lights Out was a Who’s Out There Horror Film Short challenge winner and has now been adopted by producer James Wan (best known for his work on The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2). Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger once the lights go out. Will you be able to keep the lights on July 8th?

Nerve

In an attempt to broaden her horizons, a high school senior wallflower joins a global online game of provocative truth or dare while an audience of “watchers” vote and comment. But as she becomes a sensation and advances higher and higher, the game evolves and soon she finds herself in a dangerous and life-ending situation. There is something unique about this film that caught the attention of viewers. Will you be a watcher or player on July 27th?

Bad Moms

Who knew being a mom could look this good or be this bad? Amy Mitchell (Mila Kunis) puts her family first, second, and third. But her man-child husband, high-maintenance kids and idiot boss are taking a toll. When the alpha moms (Christina Applegate, Annie Mumolo and Jada Pinkett Smith) at her kids’ school push her too far, Amy finally snaps. Teaming up with two other misfit moms (Kathryn Hahn, Kristen Bell), Amy gets a jolt of freedom that shakes up her life.
