The Walking Dead: Highlights from 7×12 “Say Yes”

Michonne and Rick go on a honeymoon vacation to acquire weapons for the Heaspters, and Sasha and Rosita prepare to go rogue to take on Negan. Here are my highlights from tonight’s episode, “Say Yes.”

The Honeymoon

Rick and Michonne pair up and go on a scavenger hunt to find guns for the Heapsters. The couple find themselves enjoying the extended leave from Alexandria by having candle light dinners, rolling around in the van, and some light hearted fun along the way. The two discover a carnival ground filled with walkers some of which are in military clothing carrying guns on their backs.

Michonne and Rick are confident that they can take out all the walkers and acquire the guns needed to fulfill the Heapster’s agreement. After falling through a rickety ceiling, the duo make their way through the carnival grounds, and share friendly banter on the plan Rick had come up with. The plan left Michonne eight walkers to kill while Rick kills two walkers to get to a car in order to block the opening in the gate.  This was to prevent other walkers from wandering in before they can execute the plan.

However, their plan takes an unexpected turn when Rick discovers that the brakes of the car no longer work. Shortly after, there is rain of gunfire coming from a walker stuck on pikes whose gun is set off.   This causes Michonne to quickly take coverage in the trunk of the car while Rick ducks down in the front seat before walkers swarm around the vehicle.

The two still find humor in their situation before they enact plan B: they both take off separately to adjacent park attractions where they can watch one another. One walker at a time, the two begin to kill off the hoard until Rick is distracted by a deer in the distance.

He takes the moment to fulfill a promise he made to Michonne. This goes back to an earlier episode where Michonne’s catch of a deer was ruined by The Saviors visit to Alexandria. He climbs up the carousel and aims for the deer. Just as he gets the deer in sight, the metal of the carousel gives way and he falls to the ground. Walkers come to surround Rick in a heart stopping moment that had fans on the edge of their seats.

Michonne tries to make it over to a distressed Rick when she hears gun shots and comes up on the swarm of Walkers feasting on a carcass. Michonne goes into a state of shock as her last image of Rick was of him on the ground and the walkers closing in. She drops her katana in disbelief. Even when Rick appears to be alive it takes Michonne a moment to come to. She still wonders if Rick before her is real, and it is only after Rick tosses her the katana does she snap out of her state of shock.  Together they finish the last of the walkers.

On the way back to the Heapsters, Rick and Michonne have a bit of a heart to heart. Rick talks about what they are doing and what kind of life he wants for those he cares about. He knows eventually he will die and if he dies protecting those he cares about he needs Michonne to be okay with his loss. Rick is slowly coming to terms with the darkness that the apocalypse brings. He recalls where it all began which leads to a bittersweet reference to Glenn.

“Glenn saved me. Right at the start. I couldn’t save him.”  -Rick Grimes

Notable Moments

  • Rosita and Sasha are going to attempt to take on Negan themselves. Rosita comes to Sasha at Hilltop after Rick’s failed attempt to secure The Heapster’s agreement for battle. Rosita brings some of the stolen guns to Sasha along with knowledge about the compound. This decision is coming purely from emotions and is doomed already to fail.
  • Tara could be ready to tell Rick about Oceanside and possibly using them to help with the numbers and ammo to join the fight against the saviors.
