Shadowhunters 2×14: “The Fair Folk” Review and Highlights

Alec Lightwood sends Clary and Jace on a mission to the Seelie Queen to investigate into the recent events of a potential uprising. This leads to an interesting development for Clary, Jace and Simon.  And Alec’s new reign over the Institute has others raising a brow to his new rule. Here are my thoughts about episode 14, “The Fair Folk.”

Welcome to Seelie Wonderland

Jace, Clary and Simon go on a mission to converse with the Seelie Queen after the most recent attack on Shadowhunters by a Seelie. The trio is surprised by the appearance of the young Queen, unsure if her youthful demeanor can be trusted. The mission is highly dangerous as Shadowhunters before them have never returned from The Seelie Realm.

The Seelie Queen toys with the trio in a game of kiss and tell as she claims that the kiss she desires will set them free. This leaves Clary in a “vine” to chose between Simon and Jace. She first kisses Simon which shows the simplicity of her choice. However, the vines remained and the sure choice was Jace. The scene was heartbreaking for all three of them. Simon left teary eyed as he watched the woman he loves kiss another, and not just any man, but the man that Clary had yearned for prior to Valentine’s lie. “See I told you, they always choose their kind,” the Seelie Queen coldly says to Simon before he flees.

Drawing the Line

Alec Lightwood, in his new reign, has ordered meetings at the Institute between the new head of the Institute and leaders of the downworlder clans. He hopes to unite them against the uprising sprouted by Valentine. However, the sit down doesn’t go as planned and leaves some with wary ideas about others.

It is especially tense between Raphael and Sebastian as the vampire becomes suspicious of the new Shadowhunter and his relationship with Izzy. He calls Sebastian a predator. However, Sebastian is not the only one with suspicions. Luke finds a phone with an anonymous caller that instructs him about the whereabouts of Valentine in order for Luke to seek revenge on his parabati brother for killing Jocelyn and his sister.

Just before he could finish the job, he is stopped by Alec and Sebastian. This leaves Valentine to question Sebastian and why he seems so familiar. Sparking what will be one interesting reveal that was eluded towards the end of the episode with a more devious side of Sebastian that fans of series are impatiently waiting for.

Notable Moments

  • The Lightwood family has a heart to heart after the news of their father’s affair and impending divorce is finalized. Another interesting plot change from the book series. Along with the show hinting at a possible romance between Maryse Lightwood and Luke Garroway. I don’t know how I feel about this impending love connection. However, I did like Izzy and Maryse’s conversation about being human despite the Angelic duty. The scene felt real and for once Maryse’s humanity has shown through which is something we haven’t seen yet.
