Shadowhunters: 2×05 ‘Too Late For Goodbyes’

Shadowhunters continues to flip the script moving away from the beloved book series with a what seems to be a conclusive end to one character. Here are the highlights and thoughts from episode 5 titled, “Dust and Shadows.”

A Mother’s Love

The episode revolved around the theme of mothers and remembering how important everyday is with those you love. Clary reminds Simon of this same thought when she encourages him to go back home to his mother. Simon takes her advice after grieving with Clary over the unexpected loss of her mother, Jocelyn. Once back home he finds it hard adjusting and pretending to be his old human self. The added snooping and questioning behavior of his sister, who discovers that his blood causes his thirst, brings his supressed vampire side to surface. His mother walks into his room and discovers a vamped out Simon munching down on a rat. Safe to say his mother believes Simon now that he’s a vampire.

Clary, throughout the episode, struggled with grief. She can’t accept the fact that her mother is gone and seeks out another warlock after Magnus’s dismissal to bring her mother back from the dead. Clary quickly discovers that she trusted the wrong warlock after taking a blood oath to repay the warlock for bringing her mother back from the dead. During the ritual she discovers something is off and is captured by the warlock. Clary is told that she was chosen to give birth to a warlock in order to grow an army to defeat Valentine. However, there is a twist as the warlock discloses that Clary with be impregnated by a demon creating the perfect mix of Warlock, Shadowhunter and Demon.

Luckily, Clary is able to kill the Demon with a rune she saw in a vision. That rune had the power to shoot out sunlight and burn the Demon to a crisp. Jace witnesses what happens and instructs Clary to keep her secret rune to herself. I get the feeling that they will use this as an advantage to take on Valentine.

Sadly, in the end, Clary learns that she must say goodbye to her mother. She joins Jace as they say goodbye to their mother, and Clary breaks down unable to finish the farewell ceremony. She watches her mother’s angelic essence float off into the night sky. Clearly broken, Clary leans on Jace and Alec feels torn as he is the one that killed Jocelyn after being possessed by the demon.

Personal Thoughts

  • I enjoyed watching the inner struggle and guilt Alec Lightwood is going though. He truly has the weight of the world on his shoulders.  Under his salty exterior, Alec has a heart.  He knows there is nothing he can do to bring back Jocelyn, but has taken it upon himself to protect Clary and Jace at all cost.
  • Isabelle looks to be addicted to Aldertree’s serum to treat Demon venom from her wound. Curious to know where this addiction will take her.
  • What will happen in the Lewis home and will Simon be able to keep his relationship with his family now that the Vampire is out of the closet?
