Boruto: Naruto Next Generation Episode 4: A Ninjutsu Battle of the Sexes Recap

Boruto returns with a really funny battle of the sexes.  Here are my thoughts on episode 4: A Ninjutsu Battle of the Sexes.

This episode was another light hearted episode and quite a funny one.  This really showed the interaction between the characters in particular between the boys and girls.  It starts with a quick lesson in summoning from Konohamaru.  The young ladies in the class love him, but Boruto is not impressed.  He tells Konohamaru to not allow the flattery to go to his head.  Boruto is not trying to be mean, but it immediately gets the girls on his case.  This is the first sense of tension between the boys and girls.

Boruto tries to prove that he can be as good as Konohamaru in summoning and steals the scroll of summoning from Konohamaru.  Boruto tries to summon a creature to only fail miserably and Sarada points out how stupid Boruto is.  Boruto quickly learns the rules for summoning in that a person must make a contract with a creature. The boys and girls discuss what creature they would like to summon which leads to another conflict between the boys and girls as the boys want reptiles and girls want cute animals.  This leads to the another confrontation.  Despite Shino trying to step in and stop the growing tension, there is clearly a line forming between the boys and girls.

Sarada steps in and reprimands Boruto not to make trouble as their class has become known as the class full of problem child mainly because of Boruto.  Tempers flare between the boys and girls especially between Sarada and Boruto. Even the teachers are not sure what to do.

The tension escalates at lunch.  Boruto and Sarada both get to the cafeteria lady and ask for the same exact thing: a Yakisoba bun.  Unfortunately, there is only one left.  Boruto has always gotten one, but today Sarada wants one.  Whether this done intentionally or not, I’m not sure.  And the reason why there is only one Yakisoba bun left?  ChoCho has bought all of them.

Sarada manages to snag the last one while Boruto is distracted.  This causes a head on confrontation between Sarada and Boruto.  It looks like they are about to get into a real fist fight until Shino steps in.  He basically is tired with the tension and fighting between the boys and girls.  He says he has made a battleground where the two groups can sort of their issues once and for all.  The victor will be able to order the other group around.

The battleground is none other than their academy and the goal is getting the flag at the top of the academy by any means possible.  It is a ninja inspired capture the flag except in this capture the flag there are traps in the school as well.  Well the boys and girls waste no time in going after the flag.  In a funny roll of events, we watch the boys and girls attack and counter attack each other.  Boruto is leading the main group of boys with Inojin, Shikadai and Denki with Sarada and ChoCho leading two separate groups of girls.

Needless to say that the antics are really funny and the boys do use some underhanded tricks like Inojin setting a huge, beast scroll frog after the girls.  Metal Lee stops the shuriken thrown at the boys only to be taken down by Sarada’s superior shuriken throwing skills.

It ends up that a small group of boys remain (Boruto, Inojin and Shikadai) versus a much larger female group led by Sarada and ChoCho.  The boys hide in a room of summoning scrolls while they come up with a plan.  The girls meanwhile are separated and trapped.  Inojin and Shikadai distract the girls while the clones of Boruto throw Boruto and a summoning scroll to the roof.  ChoCho also reaches the roof with Sarada and goes for the flag.

Boruto summons the creature from the scroll without knowing what it is.  The summoned creature knocks ChoCho from the roof.  Boruto gives up going for the flag and jumps to save ChoCho with the help of Inojin and Shikadai.  The summoned creature is a huge, wild creature that looks like the creature we have seen a few times already.  It is the dark creature with red eyes and a snake as a tail.

The students look to be in danger until Konohamaru jumps in and sends the creature back to the place it came from.

Boruto apologizes to ChoCho for putting her in danger and things seem to become less rocky between the girls and boys.  And what was funny was that the girls win with the least likely girl, Sumire, capturing the flag.

The episode ends with Shino getting his class together outside the academy and gives them a rousing and inspiring speech.  It is at this point the academy crumbles behind them due to the damage this class did to it.  This was a very funny scene after what was Shino’s attempt to inspire his students.  At the very end we get a outline of a boy watching the class from the roof.  Who is this new boy watching them?

This episode was definitely very cute and funny, but it also had some very dark moments.  This dark creature with the red eyes and snake tail keeps popping up.  I’m curious where this is going to lead.
