Attack on Titan Season 2 Episode 27: I’m Home recap

Attack on Titan is back and just as good as ever. I will be reaping my favorite moments from this new season.  So here are my favorite moments for episode 27 named I’m Home.

This episode was a heartrending episode, and it gave the fans an interesting look into Sasha’s life and her past as she is the main focus of this episode.  Before I get into the main points of the episode, I just want to say that the art work in this is  spectacular.  I especially love all the new places we get to see and some of the night scenes we get to see.  And once again I was blown away by the soundtrack of this show done by the incredible Hiroyuki Sawano.  Fans got a few more songs and themes added in this season that are amazing.

Trost District, Stohess District and the Scout Regiment

Though scenes in these places were not long or a big part of this episode, I think they were important.  In Trost, we see as General Pixis is given the horrifying news that there are titans within Wall Rose.  He is definitely shocked by the news as no news of the wall breaking has ever reached anyone, but General Pixis is an old hand on dealing with tough situations and handles the news well.

In Stohess, the district that abuts wall Sina, we see the Scout regiment packing up and leaving.  Hanji is focused on studying what looks like a piece of the wall as she tries to understand what exactly the wall is made up of.  As they are about to leave, Armin makes an interesting point to Eren and Mikasa: what if the titans are reluctant to attack the walls because there are other titans in them?  He points out that so far only the gates have been attacked which is an interesting point.

The Scouts leave Stohess, but they do not leave alone.  They take Pastor Nick with them (by gun point).  Pastor Nick is still silent despite being threatened by both Hanji and Levi, and being questioned by an aggressive Eren.  Hanji wonders aloud if maybe the church is protecting something more important than the human races’s fate.

Though this part is minimal in this episode, I think the points made are important, and I absolutely loved the artwork in this part especially the night scenes.

Sasha and her village

Hands down this episode focused on Sasha.  Sasha rides hard with the group of Scouts riding north to warn the Northern villages, one of which is her village. The rest of the scouts separate to warn the Northern villages as Sasha rides alone to her village.  We then get a gem of a flashback of Sasha and a conversation she has with her father years before she joined the cadets.  We see a much more savage and cold Sasha.  Her father is chastising her for taking meat that is meant to be cured.  They have an interesting conversation after her father can not get Sasha to give up the food.

Sasha’s father tells her that their way of life is changing with the shrinking of the forest and of the game.  Her family were hunters and lived off of the wild, but with the fall of wall Maria, refugees were flooding the area.  They need to clear the land to raise more crops and her father can see the writing on the walls.  He tells her that they plan on raising horses and is disappointed that she can not be more compassionate or understanding for the refugees and why their way of life has to change.  He tells her an important point that we are all human and we have to find a way to live together and help each other out.  I loved this insight into Sasha who has been a fan favorite for her funny and kind nature (and her obsession with food).  We see that Sasha has not always been like this and that her father was a good man who influenced her to do good.

Back to the episode, Sasha is shocked out of her flashback when she sees a pair of large titan foot prints heading in the direction of her village.  Frantic, she rides hard to where her home once stood and sees a massive town that is mostly deserted.  Sasha comes across a horrifying scene in a home of a smaller titan slowly eating the legs of a mother as her young daughter watches.  Sasha attacks the titan with an ax, but can’t kill it.  Instead, she decides to not save the mother, but save the daughter which the titan seems to be ignoring.

They get out of the house alive, but Sasha loses her horse which leaves them stranded as the titan starts to come after them.  Sasha grabs a nearby quiver of arrows and a bow and runs with the little girl to a partially raised drawbridge.  Sasha and the little girl get over it, but the titan is not far behind them.

Sasha takes a stand on the road and tells the girl to run.  Sasha stands alone with a bow and arrow by herself.  Her first arrow hits the titan in the neck, and she realizes that she needs to hit the titan in the eyes in order to at least slow it down to give them time to escape.  Sasha gets on a nearby slope, and lands one shot in the eye, but has one arrow left as the titan gets closer.

In an epic scene, Sasha drops the bow and runs at the titan with the last arrow, jamming it in it’s eye.  It has her in a bear hug and you worry that this may be the last for Sasha, but Sasha wriggles out of the titan’s grasp to the road below the slope and escapes the titan.

Sasha searches for the little girl, and runs into a group of people on horses, one of which has the little girl.  To her surprise, her father is one of the villagers who are going back to the village and who saved the little girl.  He heard the story of how Sasha risked her life to save the little and says that he is proud of his daughter.  We also learn that her father’s new trade of breeding and raising horses may have saved Sasha’s village as they gave horses to people to flee.  The last we see of them they are all riding together back in the direction of the village.

Connie and his village

The episode ends with Connie as it switches to the group heading South to warn the villages in that area one of which is Connie’s village.  This is the more dangerous route to take as the titans who attacked their fort was coming from the South.  Connie is leading the group as they race south.  They arrive in Connie’s village to find it deserted and devastated.  It was clear that the village suffered a much worse fate than Sasha’s.

Connie, along with Reiner and Bertolt, rides to his house, and sees a gruesome sight of a blonde haired titan laying alive, but unable to move on his house.  No one can explain why the titan has underdeveloped legs (which is why it can’t move) and why it is in the middle of Connie’s house, but Connie is clearly devastated by the sight.  Fans will have to wait for the next episode to know what happened in his village.
