This anime highlight is going to be about the hilarious, action/adventure anime Fairy tail.  Like most animes, I came across this one when I was looking for a new anime to watch.  I noticed that a lot of people were buying the manga.  So I decided to try it, and I really love this anime.

Fairy tail is about the adventures of the Fairy tail guild of wizards.  This guild is wild, play by their own rules, and strangely endearing.  Though the story does cover all of the members of fairy tail, its main focus is on the four main characters (Lucy Heartfilia, Natsu Dragneel with Happy, Gray Fullbuster, and Erza Scarlet) and their adventures together.

Lucy Heartfilia

Viewers of the anime meet Lucy in the first episode as she is trying to get into the Fairy tail Guild and is duped by a Lothario type of male wizard who claims he is apart of Fairy tail.  She does meet a true member of Fairy tail, Natsu Dragneel, and does become a member of Fairy tail herself.  Lucy is the ditzy blonde you can’t help but love.  She finds herself in the most awkward of circumstances, but she weathers those circumstances with a kind heart.  Lucy is a celestial wizard which means she has contracts with celestial beings (Taurus the horny bull, Aquarius the snippy mermaid, Leo the womanizing man, and so on),  and can call on them for aid.

Lucy is one of those characters that, even though she finds herself in some of the funniest circumstances, you still root for her because of her cheerful attitude.  And I love all the scenes with Natsu and Lucy as I really love that pairing.

Natsu Dragneel and Happy

Natsu and Happy are probably two of the most well known figures from Fairy tail.  Most people could recognize both from the show.  Natsu is a Dragon Slayer as in he has Dragon Slayer magic.  He was raised by a good dragon, Igneel the fire dragon, and taught how to use dragon slayer magic which gives the wizards traits of dragon (dragon lungs to blow fire and hardened skin to withstand fire).  And the magic is exactly as it sounds: the power and magic is strong enough to slay a dragon.  Now why would a dragon teach a human dragon slayer magic?  That I can’t say for spoiler purposes, but there is a very real reason why he was taught.

Natsu is definitely a strong and powerful wizard with a bad habit of leaving a path of destruction in his wake.  He is not the sharpest tool in the shed, he tends to be reckless and he loves a good fight and likes starting them too.  He’s probably one of the funniest characters because he is always at the center of some crazy stunt or mini catastrophe.

Despite being one of the dumber members of Fairy tail, Natsu has the greatest weapon yet: he has heart.  What that means is that he does not give up easily, and he would never allow someone to hurt people he considers his friends or his guild.  He will fight to his last breath which makes him a hero that I love to watch and root for.

And then there’s Happy.  Happy is the cutest and most sarcastic flying blue cat you will find.  Like Natsu, he can also be a dim bulb which makes some of the things he says and does super funny.  He loves making fun of Lucy, and is extremely loyal to Natsu.  When it comes down to a fight, Happy is right there by Natsu’s side.  Happy has probably the best comedic lines in the show.

Gray Fullbuster

Oh how I love Gray.  Gray is probably one of the few anime characters that I would fan girl over (but not too much as he is Juvia’s man, but I will get back to that).  Like Natsu, Gray loves his fair share of fights and loves challenging Natsu to them.  Gray uses Ice Maker magic in that he can make and use ice as a weapon whether it be as projectiles or just freezing stuff.  Unlike Natsu, Gray is a little more level headed and less reckless, but that doesn’t stop him from going off on a crazy adventure especially if Natsu is involved.  Gray won’t admit it, but he as a begrudging friendship with Natsu and is one of the four member team with Natsu (along with Lucy and Erza).

One of Gray’s most notorious things he does is that he has an unfortunate (or for Juvia fortunate) habit of taking off his clothes most times without even realizing it regardless of where they are.  This leads to some really comical moments with Gray, and the reason why he is usually shirtless.

And I have to throw a word in for Juvia, who is madly (and obsessively) in love with Gray.  I will admit she is a bit of a stalker, but I love the pairing of the two and I do think that Gray does have some feelings towards her.

Erza Scarlet

Erza Scarlet is known as the strongest female wizard of the Fairy tail guild for good reason.  She is powerful and kickass, but she is also not afraid to lay down the law especially with Natsu and Gray when they get out of control.  Erza can easily said to be domineering. She is almost like a war general.  She doesn’t shy away from battle and in fact invites it, but, most times, she can keep a level head.  She is a clear leader.  Sometimes, she can be a little scary in how she get things done.  Erza is always fun to watch in her battle scenes because she can lay down the smack down.

She uses Requip magic in that she can change her armor and the weapons she uses in a flash, and knows how to use all sorts of weapons very well.  Her battle prowess is so well known by other guilds that she has garnered the name Titania the Queen of the Fairies (more than likely in reference to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Nights Dream where Titania is the Queen of the fairies).

While Erza can be hard, there are times when she is very vulnerable especially with concerns of her past and anything to do with Jellal.  I am a huge Erza and Jellal shipper.  I think this makes her character interesting and more human as she does have both sides.

The Show Itself:

What I liked most about the show is the emotional roller coaster you go through will watching it.  The show will have you laughing so hard your crying, and then bawling your eyes out the next moment.  The Fairy tail guild is fun and it finds a special place in your heart as you cheer for them in their triumphs and sympathize with them in their tragedies.  My favorite part of the series has to be the Grand Magic Games arc as it is a triumphant return of Fairy tail’s glory and their strongest members.

Every character has an interesting background especially the main four.  I love how Natsu never fully gives up looking for Igneel, who is a dragon but someone he considers his father.  And I love watching the characters in their battles and how they eventually triumph over adversity.  There is a lot of heart in this anime, and when you add in the humor this show is worth watching.
